**What Is a Sand Track for 4×4 Use, and How Do You Use It Correctly?**
A **sand track**—also known as a **recovery track** or **traction board**—is an essential recovery tool for 4×4 vehicles. It’s used to help a stuck vehicle regain traction in **loose terrain** such as sand, mud, snow, or soft soil.
Your bright orange sand track is not just for looks—its high visibility makes it easier to locate in tricky off-road conditions.
Purpose of a Sand Track:
- Provides instant traction under the wheels when your tyres are spinning and can’t grip.
- Helps you recover your vehicle without needing a winch or tow.
- Minimizes the risk of digging in deeper or damaging your drivetrain during recovery.
Correct Way to Use a Sand Track:
1. Stop Spinning!
As soon as you feel your wheels spinning or bogging down, stop. Spinning only digs you in deeper.
2. Clear the Area
Dig out excess sand or mud from around the tyres, especially in front of the driven wheels. The more level the surface, the better.
3. Position the Sand Tracks
Slide the sand tracks under the tyres, angled slightly downward and **wedged under the tyre tread**. Make sure the traction lugs face upwards to grip the tyre.
4. Drive Out Slowly
Engage low-range 4WD if you have it. Gently accelerate forward (or reverse, depending on where the tracks are placed). **Avoid wheelspin**, or you’ll damage the track and bury yourself again.
5. Recover the Tracks
Once you’re out, stop and retrieve the tracks. Shake off any debris and store them safely for the next recovery.
Why Bright Orange?
- Visibility: Easy to find even when buried under sand or mud.
- Safety: Reduces the chance of leaving them behind in tough conditions.
